Digestive health is about more than just what you eat.

The book, The Elemental Woman, discusses the healing concepts of Ayurvedic Mindful Eating Principles. These food rituals are tools that give your mind-body the attention it needs to complete the extensive process of digestion.
Our culture teaches that digestion is mainly involuntary, but that is not true. Yes, your conscious actions create digestive health, even if other types of healing are necessary. Slowing down, becoming mindful, and expressing gratitude are ways to create change in many systems of your body and many aspects of your health and wellness.
Before a meal, explore mindfulness. Pause, breathe, and express gratitude for the nourishment you are about to receive. Close your eyes. Inhale the aroma. Bite down and savor that first taste. For the first few bites, really notice how the food feels, and chew well and evenly. These mindful moments add up to feeling positive about your current meal and your future meal. But the first wave of effort should be affirmation or a food blessing. Something that sets the tone and actively reminds you of the calm, health, and gratitude you seek. Women should use prayers from their faith or just pause with quiet gratitude. But because our culture suffers from so much food anxiety, here I offer you three examples of affirmative-style blessings to say before a meal. You can find Mindful Eating Principles in The Elemental Woman HERE
What are positive affirmations?
Positive affirmations can help “rewrite” the brain
By leveraging neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections, positive affirmations heal (or are a big part in healing) self-sabotaging thoughts. In manual therapy, we think of how neurons that fire together stay together. You want to couple food and eating with a calm breath, a focus on nourishment, and ultimately lasting self-love. When you are consistent, the repetition of positive statements strengthens neural pathways. As the positive pathways associated with those thoughts grow, positive thinking and making positive choices become more natural, and negative thought patterns—over time—weaken. With the use of affirmation, activity in the reward-related center of the brain grows, and there can be an increase in positive neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.
Positive thinking leads to all kinds of substantial changes, but that does not mean you can force yourself to think positively. Affirmations are not force, but they are training. So, use these affirmations below and couple them with mealtime. Learn to love food, not just struggle with or control food.
Affirmation/blessings for mealtime:
My worth is endless and does not come from food or dieting. I know what our culture lacks, and I actively choose to fill myself with love, acceptance, compassion, and knowledge. With knowledge, I choose to wire my brain and pair meals and snacks with positive thoughts about my actions and my body.
I pause and breathe in this beautiful meal. I fill my senses with everything that food offers. I taste slowly. I am so grateful for this moment and my ability to connect with the great joy that is food.
I give my absolute thanks for the food provided. This lovingly prepared food represents the love I feel for myself, the love I feel for my family, and the love I feel for all sentient beings. I radiant love for myself, and all others.
I am nourished by the loving act of creation. I am nourished by the love I give back to this creation. I am nourished by the seed, the soil, the light, the air, the rain, and the ultimate fruit. I give thanks for everything I am, everything I give, and everything I receive.
Whereas control surrounding food can be negative, I know some women suffer because they have told themselves they have no control. I do not seek tight control, but I allow myself to feel a calm sense of control. I am capable.
I am loving. I am nourished. I am thankful.
Peace & Love,
Tara
